What qualities does John McCain believe are essential to being a good political leader?
In his speech in 2016, after having received a prize for “civility in public life”, John McCain speaks about both his relationship with Joe Biden and his good leadership qualities. Firstly, he describes Biden as a leader that is fair, even to people that don’t always deserve it and treats them with dignity equal to his own. This is also McCain’s definition of humanity. To illustrate, he refers to the way he treated staff and John McCain personally which illustrates his genuine character and class. Joe Biden has shown his empathy and respect towards people that might be in subordinate positions than himself. Referring to the views of John McCain, Joe Biden can be described as good, kind, decent as well as a genuine patriot who puts his country before himself. Additionally, McCain tries to encourage Americans to fight hard and noisily when needed and to finally recognize the truth that they all are fellow Americans and share the same identity.
What does John McCain say about himself in the process of praising Joe Biden and talking about leadership? That is, what is your impression of John McCain after watching his speech?
John McCain speaks highly about Biden and respects him but also feels honoured to be able to be calling him his friend. He also regards him as an example of a genuinely good leader that has set the right examples for the American society. Even though he underlines that they both hold strong and often opposing opinion which has been made clear to both Biden and McCain over the course of time, this hasn’t affected their relationship or respect towards each other. One of the reasons McCain respects Biden is the fact that although he was in a subordinate position than Biden, he was treated fairly by him. Such examples have led to McCain’s perception of Biden as the example of a good leader. It is my personal belief that although politics can lead to heated debates or misunderstandings, McCain expresses openly his respect for a leader that might have different beliefs and opinions but is also, according to McCain, a genuine, respectful and fair patriot that puts his country before himself. This indicates that political leaders can indeed put their differences aside sometimes and respect each other in order to set an example for society and future leaders.
